Baruch College to graduate over 5,800 students at 2022 launch event on May 26 at Barclays Center

Baruch College returns to Barclays Center on May 26 to celebrate the Class of 2022. Changemaker visionary Shawn Dove will deliver the keynote address.

Baruch College will hold its 2022 commencement ceremony on May 26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, conferring degrees on 5,837 undergraduate and graduate students from the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, Weissman School of Arts and Sciences and the Zicklin School of Business. The event starts at 9:30 a.m.

Baruch College President S. David Wu, PhD, will preside over the drills, and Linda Essig, PhD, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, will act as emcee.

The class of 2022 includes more than 4,100 undergraduate students, more than 1,600 graduate graduates, and 11 graduates with doctoral degrees.

Keynote speaker

Shawn Dove, a prominent social justice activist and thought leader, will address the class of 2022.

Dove has nearly four decades of cross-sector leadership in the areas of youth and leadership development, community development, philanthropy, arts education and media literacy.

His leadership mantra is: There is no cavalry coming to save the day in our communities. We are the emblematic leaders we expected; custodians of the change we seek to see.

Learn more about Dove’s leadership roles and her book, I Too Am America: On Loving and Leading Black Men and Boyswhich draws on his own personal story as a young black boy growing up in New York to amplify and reframe the stories of black people and their communities in a more humanizing way.

Recipient of an honorary degree

Baruch College will award the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Cecilia Elena Rouse, PhD, the 30th President of the Council of Economic Advisers, the first African American to hold the position.

In this role, she is President Joe Biden’s chief economist and a member of the Cabinet. Dr. Rouse is the Katzman-Ernst Professor of Educational Economics and Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University.

Previously, Dr. Rouse served two US Presidents: a member of President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers and in the Clinton Administration as the President’s Special Advisor to the National Economic Council.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Ashley Mei Bo TorrentiClass of 2022 valedictorian and Macaulay Honors student, will earn a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Marketing Management from Zicklin School of Business and a minor in Interdisciplinary Studies and Business Law in New York City.

Torrenti has held numerous leadership and service positions, including peer mentor Baruch Ambassador, Vice Chairman of the Macaulay Business Club’s Marketing Committee, and notably serving as President and later Coach of one of the largest Macaulay’s great clubs – The Marauders Quidditch Team.

She has volunteered over 5,000 hours with various wildlife organizations and is learning American Sign Language at the Lexington School of Deaf.

Torrenti is currently applying to graduate school to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. In the meantime, she is working on writing children’s books with her father.

Salutatorian Briana Staten is the first in her family to graduate from college. She is in the process of earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Advertising Marketing Communications from the Zicklin School of Business and completing a minor in Anthropology.

Staten was vice president of academic affairs at the undergraduate student government, then became executive vice president working with student senators to organize various programs for the Bearcat community. She has been a peer mentor with Success Network and has served as a peer mentor for freshman seminars to students during their first semesters and transitioning to college. Staten plans to pursue a master’s degree in digital marketing at Baruch.
